General Overview:
Essentially, how it works is that there is a set number of Spies (AKA mafia) who are undercover amongst the ranks of the Resistance (AKA town). The Resistance is attempting to overthrow the corrupt government by passing missions, whereas the Spies are trying to ensure those missions fail.
It's very simple, but can get very, very hectic.
If you'd rather watch a video of a guy explain the game way better than I can, go here:
How the game works:
There is a different board depending on the number of players. Let's pretend we have 5 players, so we'll be using the 5-player board.
(note the bottom left corner; this tells you how many spies there are depending on number of players. With 5 players, there are 2 spies. Spies know who each other are)
The numbers on the top represent each mission; down on the right corner, it shows how many people are supposed to go on each mission.
So, in a 5-player game, it goes like this:
Mission 1: 2 people
Mission 2: 3 people
Mission 3: 2 people
Mission 4: 3 people
Mission 5: 3 people
There is a new leader each round (the leadership role normally moves around in a clockwise manner in the board game, but for this I'll simply go down the player's list), and this leader will pick who is going on the current mission.
The game starts with mission 1; for this mission, only two people are going on the mission. The leader (let's say I'm playing, and I'm the leader first based on random draw) can pick themselves if they wish. But instead of picking myself, I'm going to pick Jake and Alleen.
All the players may communicate on the thread to persuade my decision and convince me to put them on the mission instead of Jake or Alleen. For the most part, everyone wants to go onto a mission.
To make my decision final, I will say
DEPLOY: Jake
DEPLOY: Alleen
The leader should announce all that they are deploying into the same post; once it's in bold, it's official, and that is the team going on the mission.
All of that will be called the "DEPLOYMENT PHASE".
The next phase will be called the "VOTING PHASE".
Jake and Alleen have been assigned to the mission, but they're not going yet. They need approval from the entire team. At this point, every player will PM/email me saying either
ACCEPT
or
REJECT
Accept means you accept the team that is going on this mission
Reject means you do not approve of the current team going on the mission.
Once everyone has messaged me privately, I'll announce everyone's decision at the same time.
Just to help you visualize, it would look like this:
Turner (leader): ACCEPT
Jake: ACCEPT
Alleen: ACCEPT
Lissa: REJECT
Skelda: REJECT
There are multiple reasons why Lissa and Skelda may have rejected it. The main reason being, they simply do not approve of the team going on the mission, because Lissa/Skelda may think there's a spy on that team.
Or, if say both Lissa AND Skelda are the spies, they might reject this team KNOWING that there are no spies on it, and the spies always want a spy on a mission so that they can fail it.
Let's say I'm a spy with Jake. I accepted it, because I know Jake is on it. Jake accepted it because he's on it, so he knows he can fail it. Alleen may have just accepted it because she knows she's good, and she's trusting that Jake is good too. Or maybe she suspects Jake of being the spy but wants to go on the mission anyway to test whether or not he actually is.
If the majority (or half) of the players REJECT, the selected team does NOT go to the mission, and instead a new team will be selected by a new leader. Whoever is below me on the player list (let's say Jake is), will be the new leader, and it's now his job to select a new team. He can select the same people from the old team (himself and Alleen), or pick an entirely new team.
(If a team is rejected 5 times in a row, Spies automatically win. This doesn't happen often, in fact, it has never happened in all the times I've played this game)
If the majority of players ACCEPT, the team goes through with the mission.
"MISSION PHASE"
Let's say the team I chose as leader was accepted, and both Jake and Alleen are going on the mission.
Now, both Jake and Alleen will PM me telling me either PASS or FAIL.
If you are a member of the Resistance, you AUTOMATICALLY PASS. Therefore, if a Resistance member is on the team, they don't really need to message me because they automatically have to pass the mission.
As for a spy on the mission, they get to choose to fail OR pass.
I'd prefer it if spies on the mission send me their decision beforehand, so that right when a mission is accepted, I can reveal the results of the mission right away without having to wait for any spies to tell me whether or not they want to pass or fail it.
RESULTS!
Let's say both Jake and Alleen are Resistance, so they automatically pass the mission. This is what I'd post on the thread:
But let's say Jake is a spy. For this mission, he decides to sabotage. He will fail the mission.
A mission only needs ONE person to fail it in order for the whole mission to be failed.
WIN CONDITION
There are 5 rounds. Each round represents a mission.
-If 3 missions are failed, SPIES WIN.
-If 3 missions succeed, RESISTANCE WINS.
Whichever team reaches 3 first wins.
